hearty spaghetti with meat sauce

This dish is so warm and comforting.  The meat with the heartiness of the mushrooms and the warm pasta will leave you feeling full and satisfied.  I like to pair this recipe with simple side salad.  Be warned–you will have leftovers (unless you have teenagers in the house!)

Ingredients

Scale

1 pound hot Italian sausage (mild sausage can be subbed if you prefer)

1 pound ground beef

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 onion, chopped

4 cloves garlic, chopped

8 ounces white button mushrooms, sliced

1 can crushed tomatoes

1 tablespoon oregano

1 can sliced black olives

1 teaspoon basil

Salt and pepper to taste

1 package spaghetti noodles, prepared with package instructions

Shredded parmesan cheese, for serving

Instructions

Prepare the spaghetti, according to package instructions.  Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium high heat.  Add the Italian sausage and ground beef, and cook until browned through.  Add onion and garlic and continue cooking until they are translucent.  Add mushrooms and salt and pepper, to taste, and cook until the mushrooms are just tender.  Add oregano, basil, crushed tomatoes and black olives.  Simmer for 20 minutes or longer while the noodles are cooking.  Pour the noodles and sauce into a large bowl and mix together.  Serve with shredded parmesan cheese and a sides salad. Enjoy!
